This was quite the fire and the call came in as several people trapped in their apartments…Franklin County had six deputies in Sullivan, they had just finished eating breakfast at the Flying J Restaurant, they heard the call and responded, arriving prior to Sullivan Firefighters, and were able to break into a few apartments and rescue the residents trapped inside.
I drove Ladder Truck 812 to the scene, was directed into the apartment building parking lot, parking parallel to the main building, was hooked up to a hydrant nearby pretty fast, and then raised the ladder. Command requested that I sweep the nozzle back and forth to attack the roof fire, so I handled that on my own with the remote control until Nolan Crawford approached me and volunteered to climb the ladder and work the nozzle. I said sure, just stay in touch with me on the voice box up there and he began climbing up the ladder. He and I worked like a well oiled machine and in 45 minutes, we had knocked the roof fire out and interior crews were able to re-enter the building and put the remaining fire out.
Will add photos as soon as I can, in the process of re-building my library of files.
