California

Weather like this makes me think about my California trip in June this past summer…flew out for a family reunion at Stockton and wound up with a couple of free days so drove over to the Monterey Coastline and wound up shooting the beaches and rocky coast, plus a waterfall near there the first free day, which is called Mc Way Falls in Julia Pfeiffer State Park. The trees and flowers  out there, while different looking from our landscapes here, are still quite pretty and arty.

Mc Way Falls and Cove

Above is McWay Falls and Cove, a nice waterfall that shoots out from that chunk of dark rock on the left side, after it flows under Highway One, and comes down into the sandy stretch of beach sand by the cove. Below is Smugglers Cove, a bit north of McWay Falls State Park, where smugglers used to use the cove for cover from the authorities and after dropping anchor in the cove, they walked through the chunk of rock and hillside through a tunnel build from large wood timbers….

I saw alot of lizards on my hike down to the cove and tunnel that day….

…but the rugged beauty along the coastline just took your breath away….

Coast Near Monterey

On my second free day I returned and photographed a young man that I had been talking with on the phone and internet, had been able to find Dannon some modeling work out in California and then he told me he would shoot with me when I flew out there.  I enjoyed the coastline south of Monterey and he met me there the next morning. He has a beautiful build and looked great on the beach rocks with the large waves crashing on shore. Dannon and I even found a few starfish while shooting and there was even a commercial fishing boat out in the water while I was photographing him on the rocks with the waves.  Talk about a super guy to work with, could have shot him all day long out there. Dannon lives along the coast in the San Jose area.

Here are a few of my images of Dannon from the shoot on the beach there…….

He really enjoyed the rocks so we concentrated on those alot and with the waves crashing in on the rocks, it made for some great action as well. As I stated earlier, we found some neat starfish at the second location just up the coastline about a mile from the starting location….

The day before, I even found some California Jade while out there. South of Monterey there are a few beaches where one can find Jade, one is called Jade Beach near Jade Cove, another is Sand Dollar Beach, and yet another just south of those two, one can find Jade in about nine different colors, Willow Creek Beach. Most of the jade that is found there is green or black or a mixture of both colors, and is used extensively for carvings and tumbling stones.

Snow and Ice Scenery

Well we are hearing the words heavy snow possible for Wednesday next week already. I kind of dread it even though everyone who knows me would tell you that it doesnt sound like me, mainly because I like snow. As I get older and hopefully wiser too, I realize I do like snow, I just hate the cold that normally comes with the snow. I would like it a lot more if we could have snow and say seventy degrees at the same time. I dread it this time because just last week we were enjoying our Indian Summer, it was sixty degrees just the other day and now, all of a sudden, they are saying heavy snow !  Geez.

Well here are some pics from the past few years…one thing is for sure, snow and ice do make things prettier in the winter, specially the barren trees. Someone even asked me if I ever photograph models in the snow and I said yes, I have done this in the past, but its something the model has to be interested in first, I dont ask them to do it, they ask me.  I shot some of these pix for Channel Five News last year.

Mountain Harbor Resort Nov 2009

Had a great time at Mountain Harbor Resort this year once again. This year the weather was very warm, only one cloudy day with a bit of cool overcast, but even that morning started out warm and there was no rain while we were there this time. Krystin joined me for the first two days…she really needed a break from work….and Kyle joined me for the last two days of the four day stay, and several models and friends joined us along the way from Arkansas as well. I brought back two hundred pounds of quartz crystals and shot over 2500 pics while there, visited Garvan Gardens and saw some spotty color, met and worked with a good photographer friend, Randy Hardy,  from the area and visited with a rock dealer friend, Johnny B,  in Mt Ida as well. I also photographed several nice sunsets over Lake Ouachita and even saw and photographed the new fireboat for Joplin Fire Department, which is hosted and maintained by Mountain Harbor Resort. This is one great place to stay at, very friendly staff and a very dog friendly location to stay at as well. This was my fourth year staying here. I cant say enough good things about the staff at this beautiful location.

One of my local models to the area, Randy, met Krysten and I over at Garvan Gardens to help me as I photographed her in a wedding dress there…this is a beautiful outdoor garden, much like the Missouri Botanical Garden in St Louis, except that this one sits on a large pointe of Lake Hamilton and features some nice waterfalls….

….and a Japanese Joy Moon Bridge like you have never seen before. Krysten looked stunning in the dress there, too…..

On the way back, Kyle and I stopped off at Y City along Highway 71 and explored the waterfalls there…..

Jeans Stud Fouche River Falls

…Kyle is a talented acrobat and tumbler and really gets into handstands, so naturally he performed a couple of them on the top of the waterfall there…

and then we drove on to Waldron, where most of my family is from…we drove in on Ross Creek Road, which is another way in, cause it gives you a different view of the farm across the fields….

Family Farm From South

….and out at the family farm we had a great dinner and visited with several family members and friends.  It was the first weekend of deer season in Arkansas as well and my Uncle Joe cooks for family and friends at the farm where my mom and her brothers and sisters grew up. For many years my grandparents operated a large dairy farm and in the years since my grandfather passed on, my Uncle Joe took over the farmhouse and restored it for a summer house….

Uncle Joe built a new barn in the pasture across the road from the farmhouse….

Mid afternoon Kyle and my mom and I started for home, driving through hard rain and arriving later in the evening, tired but very happy after a nice four day vacation in south central Arkansas, as seen below….

Building Fire in Cuba

Last week was a busy week for area fire departments and ours especially…we now have a combination paid/volunteer fire department and we were called to assist Cuba Fire Dept with a building fire Saturday night. It came in as fully involved and people trapped on the roof,  and they requested our ladder truck..I started toward the station but the paid crew decided not to wait long and took off, so I turned around and headed up there in my truck instead. I dont run code when I do that, mainly respond to take a few pics, can leave when I want that way, but also have my gear in my truck and can assist the truck crew if needed. I arrived ahead of the Ladder truck by about ten minutes and found the building not to be fully involved. Had it been fully involved, one would have been able to see the glow of the fire from miles away on approach by the interstate, but that wasnt the case. There was heavy smoke coming off the roof and from windows on the first and second floors on the east side of the building, and crews had made a good interior knockdown and were trying to get to the seat of the fire and make a secondary search when I parked nearby. Our truck laddered the second floor and assisted with scene lighting and our truck crew placed a ground ladder to the roof of the porch in case interior crews had to make an escape fast. There were several departments on hand with equipment and manpower and so several firefighters including Sullivan`s, were able to rotate into the building and knock down the remaining fire. The only flames I saw were in an upstairs apartment window and only briefly. This is an old building, the original Cuba Hotel building near the railroad tracks and Cuba made a great stop on the fire.

House Fire While Photographing Fall Foliage

Not Much Left, FD Begins Attack

Was out photographing the fall foliage the other day after it finally stopped raining Thursday morning, and my pager activated and we were kicked out to a house fire a few miles north of where I was shooting the leaves. I jumped in my truck and took off down some side roads to get to where I the house was located. The county dispatcher gave our responding trucks different directions than the way I was headed, but due to my knowledge of backroads and delivery driving experience for many years, as well as knowing my fire district well, I knew my route would take me there well ahead of their response time. As I was driving down the roads, I looked in the direction of the call and saw a large plume of heavy black smoke, and called the county dispatcher to let them know as well. I arrived on the scene a few minutes later, the residence owner wasnt home, they were out furniture shopping I was told by a neighbor who called it in, and I called the county dispatcher back to let them know I was on scene and the double wide mobile home was eighty percent involved with heavy fire with no other buildings close. I asked him to get the rural electric coop en route due to a transformer close to the fire and wires very close to the fire as well, which were dripping and burning from the radiant heat. An ambulance crew arrived and right after that, the homeowners arrived and the wife collapsed at the entrance to the driveway and we had to assist her off to the side before the trucks arrived.

One of our deputy chiefs arrived a few minutes later and we held traffic until the local deputies arrived, and then a few minutes after that the fire trucks started rolling in. From the time I arrived to the time the trucks arrived was probably seven long minutes and the home was totally consumed by heavy fire leaving firefighters nothing to do except to douse the flames and hopefully retain something for the investigators to sift through to determine the cause of the fire.
