Sullivan FD Jr Firefighter Academy 2012

Sullivan Fire District held their annual Junior Firefighter Academy last week and I was able to photograph a few extra events this year including RIT training, auto extrication, brush firefighting, and culiminating in the live burn exercises at Boles Fire District`s Training Center at Labadie. I stopped there on my way home from work on Friday and photographed it. Below are some of the photos I took.

Arkansas in May

Missy and I loaded up the truck two weeks ago and headed south to Arkansas for a week`s stay on beautiful Lake Ouachita west of Hot Springs and east of Mount Ida….I was asked to photograph the scenery down there four times a year and this was our spring trip down there.

I stopped off in Waldron, on the way down, where my parents are both from and my Mom was raised there on the family farm. I have many fond memories of the family farm and my grandparents and many cousins and relatives in that area from several trips down there at various times of the years, and we still travel there for family reunions at the farm in November each year. My grandparents are buried nearby and my parents usually travel down there for Decoration Day at the cemetery, but were unable to do so this year, so I offered to take care of it for them. It was a beautiful drive out to Sehorn Cemetery, which sits up on a hillside overlooking a creek valley near Winfield, just west of Waldron.

Mom takes hanging baskets down each year and changes them out, I set the new ones on the grass and removed the older ones from the Shepherd`s hook and changed them out…

From there, we drove on south to Mount Ida and east on 270 to our turnoff, Mountain Harbor Road, at a wide spot in the road called Joplin. We were staying in a beautifully furnished condo in Harbor East, which was within sight of the lake waters…I photographed the condo and several others when there in November last fall and would mainly be concentrating on scenery around the lake and boating activities on this trip. I had intended to drive on down to Hot Springs and get a good steak dinner at Colton`s, and visit with one of my good friends Scott Effird, who works there, but found myself a little too tired after the long drive down today. We had alot of headwinds on the way down, and I was wore out, so we went over to the Harbor Dining Lodge instead and had a good dinner there. I really enjoy the atmosphere in the Harbor Lodge, very friendly people that work there and there is a great view of the lake there while eating. After dinner, we went down and looked at the big fireboat again, its a retired Coast Guard Cutter retrofitted to use as a fireboat….

05 Neat Fireboat Mtn Harbor

…it was purchased by a resident of Mountain Harbor for the Harbor to use as a fireboat….it almost went to Alaska and would have if it hadnt been purchased, from what I understand. It sure is impressive looking and I was treated to a tour of it while there as well.

Missy and I wandered over to Micah`s Pointe after that and photographed some speedboats racing across the west side of the lake as the sun began to set….

…and a sailboat tied up in one of the many docks at Mountain Harbor….

…and then I spotted a couple of fishermen trying their luck from the waters near a beautiful wooden bridge near the Pointe….

09 Fishermen Off Micah Point

..pretty soon after that, the sun began setting and I photographed it….

10 Sunset Micahs Point

…this is a great place to shoot sunsets from, the Pointe sits atop a beautiful high bluff overlooking Lake Ouachita with a great expanse of water to the west right in front of you…there is a nice wooden platform built up on top of the bluff and nicely framed with beautiful pines and cedars…I know I`m using the word beautiful here quite a bit, but thats what this place consists of….alot of beauty….and as we stood there and watched, the sunset just kept getting better and better….

11 Sunset Micahs Point

…and while we were there, a buzzard swooped down in front of me a few times so I photographed him as well…

12 Buzzard At Sunset

…I then repositioned at the wooden bridge to get more water reflections in my images….…and while this sunset didnt fill the entire sky, the narrow cloudline in the middle sure did turn some nice colors as the sun finally dropped….

15 Sunset Wooden Bridge

16 Sunset From Wooden Bridge

…and that blossomed into this….

19 Last Sunset From Wood Bridge

and then this….

20 Last Sunset From Wood Bridge

Well the next morning, I started photographing a few things around the condo for Sami….she has a very nice condo that she lets me stay in while there, and she runs a management service for other condo owners there…she goes above and beyond for pet owners like me….provides dog bowls so I dont have to bring Missy`s….

23 Pet Bowls Provided

…her cleaning staff do a tremendous job as well, and always leave these cute characters on your bed to find when you arrive…neat greeters…..

21 Bed Character in Condo

…and even though she cant be there to greet everyone herself, on your arrival, Sami still makes you feel welcome as you walk through the door….

25 Welcome Sign in Foyer

Missy walked in past the welcome sign, saw her reflection, and prob though Sami had arranged company for her visit…

24 Missy Reflection in Foyer

…and once we got settled in, opened the fridge to stock my bottled water and Arizona Green Tea and found some treats inside waiting too….

27 Fridge On My Arrival

28 Treats In Fridge

Sami also thinks of your breakfast needs too….and she will also stock the fridge and kitchen for you if you have a shopping list, so its all there when you arrive…

29 Breakfast Treats

30 Breakfast Treats

I`m never sure if one can find what the basics I have to have…I drink a certain type of bottled water and Arizona Green Tea isnt found everywhere either…so I just take my own stuff when I travel.but she was right on the mark with cereal for me. She also provides pet pillows for your pet to sleep on and treats…

152 Pillow and Treats for Pet

…so if you ever want to stay there, give Sami a shout at Lake Ouachita Vacation Realty and she can make it happen.

After that, Missy and I got outside and took a walk around to re-acquaint ourselves with the layout of Harbor East, and get a good walk in as well….we were walking down a hill and I noticed in the ditchline and hillside that there were chunks of massive quartz sticking out of the dirt all over the place….

31 Quartz in Ditchline Mtn Harbor

…I rarely see any crystals in the quartz in this area, found a few small ones, but I have heard that they can be found in the wooded areas surrounding Lake Ouachita and there are a few old abandoned mines along the trails outside this area as well. I talked to one of the maintenance men working that morning outside and he told me that he lives just a few miles west of Mtn Harbor toward Mt Ida and there are quartz crystal clusters that pop up on his property each spring during the spring thaw season…so they can be found in some areas in the woods for sure.

We walked on down and saw that the Harbor East pool was being prepared to open soon for the season….

32 Pavilion Above Pool

…there is a nice pavilion on top and restrooms down below…there is a nice tennis court behind me and a basketball court to my left, right there with the pool…and the lake is right below the hill from the basketball court about 100 feet….as we were walking back to the condo, I saw some neat wind catchers in the form of hot air balloons….

33 Hot Air Balloon Wind Decorations

…on returning to the condo, I got word that a buddy of mine couldnt make it down to visit, so Missy and I loaded up and headed to Bear Mountain Mine to look for quartz…as we got to the entrance to Harbor East, we saw a doe feeding in the grass…

36 Doe Feeding

We had a great time over at Bear Mtn Mine, for that story and photos visit my rock collecting site at http://jwjrocks.com

I was driving in a different route than I normally take, and we came across some deer on the very east side of the property along East Basin Road, and I understand they are there every day at various times…this one was standing up at the top of a road cut…its a little fuzzy, mainly because the truck was running and my arm was resting on the windowsill while shooting….

37 Doe At Top of Bluff

…I drove down to a different section for my sunset photos this time…down to a boat ramp in Harbor East, right below and just east of the pool and pavilion area…we found it during our morning walk and it looked like a great place to shoot some photos…and it was….

The next morning we got up bright and early and headed over to Miller Mountain Mine, on the northeast corner of Lake Ouachita and about 12 miles west of Jessieville off Hwy 298…another of my favorite quartz mines to go dig at…that story is also in my rock collecting site.  I wore out there by 1 pm and then we headed down to Hot Springs to grab a pizza and headed back the condo to rest up the rest of the day. I think the heat must have worn me down two days in a row, it was early May and already hot and muggy down there. I didnt shoot the sunset this evening because there were no clouds in the sky and it was just not very pretty at all, which is highly unusual for Mtn Harbor cause its a very pretty place to shoot sunsets and this time of the year they are normally very nice.

Friday morning I waited for Sami to get back from some errands, and while waiting, I visited with Stu Schmidt, who is a rock collector and buyer, he used to have his own quartz mine near Mount Ida, and a wavellite mine near Avante, on the north side of Lake Ouachita, but recently sold both mines and now he just buys and sells rocks and minerals. I went to see what he had in green wavellite and wound up purchasing a few specimens from him that were covered in bubbles and cats eye. Pretty stuff.

When I returned to Harbor East, I stopped off to photograph a trailhead for Sami, located next to Turtle Spa….

Friday afternoon, Sami picked me up and we went out on Lake Ouachita to shoot some boats and scenery…here are some friends of hers coming into port as we were going out on to the lake….

56 Boaters Friday

…we first motored over to the marina to get some gas and I met a few of the marina boys there…Connor is one of the marina boys and he showed me the fire boat up close, gave me a tour of it, and let me tell you, the interior storage room on it was like a sauna…it was quite impressive though. After filling the gas tank, we motored out into the middle of the lake and saw boats all over the place….

…and on the other side of the cove was an island that has a memorial bench placed up above the waterline…the son of a family well known in the area, an area the son really liked to visit and enjoyed during his time on earth…friends placed a concrete memorial bench here in his honor….

73 Memorial Bench on Island

…very pretty place for it and well thought out and designed……and here you see the bench above and closeup below…

…we then motored over to Micah`s Pointe…here is the pretty wooden bridge where I shot sunsets on Tuesday night….

82 Wood Bridge and Glass House

…you can see the glass house at the top of the hill on the right side above the bridge…this house is owned by friends of Sami, and there is a tremendous view from there as well…I met them the next day at the Parking Lot, too…very nice people. The next photo  shows Micah`s Pointe….

123 Houseboat 100 footer

...it`s one hundred feet long folks…I never knew houseboats were that big, never seen one that long, never have seen any that big out on the water, but there were several tied up in the three marina`s there….and he gave me a grand tour of the inside and it was absolutely beautiful, very nicely furnished and just immaculate interior…six or seven bedrooms…we saw so many I lost count after four, each has its own bath, the master bath has a hot tub, there is another hot tub up on the roof, full size kitchen, dining room, and living room, and a full size deck outside the living room.

Sami dropped me off at the condo and after cleaning up, Missy and I headed to the lodge to get some supper…we then headed over to the east basin boat dock to see how well the sunset would look tonight…we were pleasantly surprised this evening….

100 Sunset Friday Night

…it was absolutely gorgeous !!! I walked down to the waters edge on the shoreline and started shooting immediately…there was a couple there taking a boat out of the water and a young lady snapping photos of the setting sun with her Canon camera…I gave her some tips on how to get some better sunset photos while her husband was placing their boat on the trailer…

Saturday morning, Sami picked me up and we went for a ride up to the top of Brady Mountain to the Hickory Nut Overlook, where there is a commanding view of the vastness of Lake Ouachita….

113 Lake From Hickory Nut Overlook

I was simply astounded at the view from up there, one could see for many miles and then some…I wished I had taken my haze filter with me as it was fairly thick up there…but here are more of the views…there were a couple of  boats zipping around down there as well…

…and then as we made our way back to the condo, we came upon a doe and fawn on the east side near some homes……they crossed the road in front of us three times as we slowly made our way through the area, and the last time we saw them they were feasting on some azaleas roadside….

121 Doe and Fawn Harbor East

Sami picked me up Saturday afternoon and we went out with a friend of hers in his speedboat, so she could get some water skiing in and I could photograph her water skiing…he had a beautiful boat and we were soon out in the middle of the lake once again and Sami was in the water getting adjusted to the water temperature….

…she did a great job considering she hadnt been out on the water for at least two years. We picked her up and headed over to the Parking Lot to meet up with her friends Julie and Joel, her neighbors across the street from her house in Harbor East…I had met them the day before and found them to be very nice. As we motored over to the island, we saw this guy zipping across the water in a pretty speedboat with a flag….

137 Speeding Boat

…we soon arrived at The Parking Lot and found Joel and Julie with Sami`s friends from the Glass House, relaxing in the water at the beach….

124 The Parking Lot

Joel came over and helped Sami and I make a safe transition from the speedboat to his houseboat, since we both had our hands full of stuff, and then after Sami`s speedboat friend took off to join up with some of his buddies on the other side of the lake, we sat down on the comfy boat seats and relaxed, waiting for Joe to arrive in his bass boat with Sami`s dogs….

…and then later that evening, I went down to the main marina at the dining lodge and tried to shoot the super moon, but folks, it looked like a normal moon to me….

…maybe just a little brighter, but thats the only difference I saw.

Well that wrapped up a nice six day stay in southern Arkansas in May, Missy and I loaded up the next morning and headed home.

Over 50 Yrs of Service to Sullivan Fire District

My dad started with Sullivan Fire Department in 1959, back when the fire station was located in the basement of City Hall…

Fire Station City Hall Trucks and Men

..back when firefighters were alerted to a fire call by the sound of two fire sirens piercing the air, back when fire gear consisted of only white coveralls and hip fire boots, and back when you were lucky if three or four firemen showed up and one went to the fire station and drove the truck. He remembers a few things from the early days…backing the twins, the two Towers pumpers built a year apart in the 50`s and how they were his favorite trucks to drive, cause they held the roads so well especially driving through Meramac State Park on Hwy 185 South….

New Twin Pumper Behind City Hall

Twin Pumper at House Fire

House Fire Near City Park 2

…he also remembers backing the trucks into the bays at City Hall, backing up very slowly and carefully because the bay doors were a tight squeeze back then….City Hall Station housed not only the two twins, but the 1941 GMC pumper and the 1929 General pumper, which was a reserve pumper and Sullivan`s first motorized pumper, and red colored as well. After that, the trucks were painted white for several years. It was only in the 80`s that we later returned to the red color for fire trucks in Sullivan.

Back in those days, the Fire Department was a city department and operated on a shoestring budget with the city paying all the bills and buying all the trucks and equipment. Back then, the Fire Department also held family and job and military service in high regard, and if a fireman couldnt show up for one of those reasons, it wasnt held against him. During that time, Jim drove a tractor trailer auto carrier for Complete Auto Transit, and delivered new Chevrolet cars and pickups all over Missouri and Arkansas to Chevrolet dealers, a job that Bill Green helped him get. Bill also talked him into joining the Fire Department back then as well. In 1961, Complete Auto temporarily transferred him and his family to Jackson, Mississippi, and a year later, transferred him back to Sullivan. Jim and Anna had purchased a house from Keith Cline before they left and kept the residence in Sullivan while gone, even returning a few months during the summer for model changes and holidays, so their residency was maintained in Sullivan while they were gone. While he was gone for the job, the Fire Department maintained his membership as well, noting him as absent on fire calls and meetings, just as if he was on family or military leave.

Fireman also worked two carnivals each summer back in the early days, the Firemen`s Picnic having started in the 1940`s and held in June each summer, followed by the Auxiliary Carnival in August before school started back up. Firemen would fry those locally famous fish sandwiches and use the money to help families burned out of their homes…

Carnival Rose City Rides

Firemen also put on the fireworks display held by the City of Sullivan, held for many years at the Sullivan Golf Course and then later at the Sullivan High School Football Field….

Setting Up Fireworks Display SHS

This event was set up and operated by Bill Green, who would hand select a crew of firemen each year to help him set up the event, light the fuses, and tear it back down and clean it back up afterwards.  The City of Sullivan was one of a few cities back then that even had a fireworks display and people from far and wide would travel just to watch the thirty minute show.

Another annual duty seriously undertaken by the firemen back then, was the testing of all hoselines on the trucks, this event often took up a whole day or weekend and usually a department dinner was held afterwards….

Hose Testing Jrs Help

Dinners at the fire station were a good memory, as there were several good cooks among the wives of the firemen and there were always several dishes of good food and desserts there, and dinners were well attended by the families of firemen….

Dinner at Fire Station

Jim also went to the Missouri State Fair in August, along with Bill Green and Bill Whitacre, and worked on the all volunteer fire department up there for a few days of the ten day operation, usually the three worked on the race track crew, standing back to back on the track curves and keeping a watchful eye on the race car drivers for any sign of crash or fire.

In 1962 when Jim and Anna returned permanently to the Sullivan area, the Fire Department had moved to the former Campbell Chevrolet Garage, after the City purchased the building and split it up, the south half of the building to the Street Department and the north half including the garage, to the Fire Department, four bays, three with doors. Just prior to their move back, the department had traded in the 1941 GMC pumper for a new truck, a 1962 Chevrolet pumper from Towers Fire Apparatus. This truck served the department and district for many years, one of the trucks that was taken to the Missouri State Fair in the 1980`s  for duty there as well.

Delivery of 62 Pumper

In 1964, Jim became an agent for American Family Insurance and his office was out of his home on Vine Street near the Golf Course. Firemen Bill Green and Bill Whitacre lived on either side of the Johnson residence.

In 1965, the Sullivan Rescue Squad was formed for all types of rescues, whether on land or water. The City purchased a used step van and rescue equipment for the department as well as several sets of heavy black fire coats and air bottles and masks. A Fire Boat was purchased a few years later as well.

Launching Boat For Drowning

Also in 1965, the first twin, the 1951 Chevrolet pumper, was traded in for a 1965 GMC Pumper from Towers, almost identical to the 1962 Chevrolet Pumper except for the grill.

In 1969, during a fish fry held at Jim`s residence for friends including City Marshal Jerry Umfleet and family, and Trooper Oscar Armfield and family, James and the other children were playing at the east side of the house when they noticed flames inside the side door of Bill Green`s residence. The children ran to the garage and alerted the men inside of the fire next door. Jim entered the Green residence and found a skillet of grease on fire on the stove. Unable to find anything with which to extinguish the fire, he wrapped several towels around the handle and carried the skillet to the door. In the process, hot grease from the skillet splashed up on Jim`s arms and he was severely burned on both arms with second and third degree burns. He was immediately transported to Sullivan Community Hospital by City Marshal Jerry Umfleet and Trooper Armfield, where he received treatment and skin grafting for his burns for the next four weeks, and then he recovered at home for six months afterward.

For several years, Jim served as an officer of different ranks, and as a Captain during the early 70`s, elected to the offices by the firemen at annual elections, and was very active in responding to fires and rescue calls, trainings, work details, and meetings. One of the larger fires during his time on the department in the early years occurred in 1975 at the Zeno`s Motel, located on the North Service Road next to the drive in theatre, now known as Family Motor Inn. The west wing of the motel complex caught fire that night and burned to the ground, believed to have been caused by arson.

Another large fire in the early 70`s occurred in 1974 at the former Shell Station Cafe, turned into an Antique Shop, located at the intersection of Elmont Road and the Highway 66….

1974 Antique Shop Elmont & I-44 Front

1974 Antique Shop Elmont & I-44

A few years later, with arson fast becoming a serious crime in the area, an arson investigation squad was soon formed by Barry West, an investigator hired by the Franklin County Prosecutors Office, and a few firemen were recruited from each department in the county and trained to investigate fires of suspicious nature. Jim was part of the original investigative squad formed and responded for many years to several fires in the county area.

I joined the department in 1974 as a junior fireman, but even before that was responding to fire calls with my dad. I remember going to a large house fire one night at the Turnipseed Farm off Sappington Bridge Road, in an area that later became known as the Turnipseed Subdivision, and I photographed the house completely involved in fire, as my dad and another fireman worked to set up hoselines and lights…Bob Golatka arrived in his white coveralls just as I snapped the photo of the house on fire...

Turnipseed House Fire

…and I remember another fire where we rolled up early one morning at a farm to find the house fully involved in fire and I photographed Jim Taylor fighting the fire alone with no gear on at all….

House Fire Late Night

…I think this is one of the stark differences between the old days when my dad started on the department, and the department as it is now…there was little fire gear available back then as there is now, and the quality of what they had back then is way different than it is now, but the ability of the Sullivan firefighters back then to do more with less, is what really stands out in my mind. In light of today`s advances in equipment and technology, they may not have had much, but they were able to work through their adversities and overcome and make things work, and they didnt complain about it either, they didnt sit around and whine about what they didnt have, they just made do with what they did have.

In 1976, they again overcame adversity and approached the voters in the city limits of Sullivan and Oak Grove, as well as the unincorporated areas of Stanton, Japan, and surrounding areas, and convinced them to approve the formation of the Sullivan Fire Protection District, as well as approve a tax rate and the election of three board members, Bill Green, Roy Baldwin, and Ed Hardy.

It was at this time that Ed Hardy stepped down from the office of Fire Chief, and Jack Cuneio, was promptly elected by the firemen as the next Fire Chief. Jim was elected as his Assistant Chief. From this point on, a department bylaw was created and passed that no Chief would serve longer than a two year term, providing additional firefighters an opportunity to serve as Chief if they desired and if elected to the office by the membership.

One of the larger house fires in 1976, was the Craig House on Sapsucker Road just north of Elmont Road, and heavy black smoke issued from the two story wood frame house on arrival. One of my classmates and friends, Ron Whitford, was with me that day and rode out to the fire with my dad and I, and helped me hand out fire coats to the firemen there…

Puttng on Coats on Arrival

…and my dad is walking toward the house wearing a black coat and white helmet in the next photo…these photos were taken by the TriCounty News reporter that day….

Gearing Up on Arrival

…I remember there was an upright propane tank on the side of the house that got a bit hot and became involved in the house fire eventually…I remember Ron and I dove to the ground behind one of the fire trucks when that bottle popped off, and soon after that, the house became fully involved….

Fully Involved 2

Another large house fire in 1976, was the St Louis University owned house for the Jesuit Priesthood, a two story wood frame home out north of Stanton at the end of Hwy JJ. I cant remember how the fire got started, but the home was full of yellow pine paneling which was quite well aged and burned very hot. The house was well involved on arrival and despite aggressive efforts to attack the fire, it was way too hot to enter….

Well Involved on Arrival

…so firefighters tried to attack it from outside on a ladder…my dad is directing their efforts at the base of the ladder….

Attack From Ladder in Front

It was also during this time that the Fire Department started utilizing inch and a half hoselines to attack structure fires, getting away from the booster or red lines for everything.

The District Board worked on getting the department their first tanker, a 1976 Ford chassis which carried 2,000 gallons of water in an old Carnation Milk Tank fitted to the chassis, seen here in a parade, and the department officers helped spec out the truck….

During this time, the District Board also worked with the Missouri Conservation Department to secure several old jeeps for brush trucks, which were housed in the fourth bay of the fire station……

In 1978, Jim was elected Chief and served his two year term, with Leroy Spradling as his Assistant Chief the first year and Bob Marsh the second year. During his term as Chief, Jim called for  the formation of the new Junior Fire Department, opened to any young men,  14 to 18 years of age, who wished to join the fire department and help the firefighters, as well as the formation of the junior firettes, open to young ladies,  14 to 18 years of age, who wished to join the Firettes Auxiliary and help support their operations after fire calls and during the carnival operations. Prior to this time, the Junior Fireman Program was only open to the immediate relatives of active firefighters.

During his tenure as Chief, Jim also arranged for Nick Sacco, Chief of the Eureka Fire District, to come to the Sullivan Fire Station and provide training classes one night each week, similar to content in present day Firefighter One Classes.

Jim also accepted the donation of an air generator trailer from the Conservation Department and guided the department in retrofitting it to fill air bottles at the scenes of large fires and the supply bottles at the fire station as well. Jim worked closely with the Conservation Department , instrumental in guiding the fire department to support the state wide campaign for one eighth cent sales tax, and working closely with Mike Reavis for the Matching Funds Grant the Conservation Department makes available to departments each year….

Dad Accepts Check from Conservation Dept

Mike Reavis was a very good friend of the Sullivan Fire District and Department…he introduced us to Smokey Bear, who became yet another good friend of the department and district, and Mike and Smokey showed up at several department events back in the day to lend their support to the department. Here Jim is seen riding the Ferris Wheel with Smokey at one of the many carnivals held during the 70`s…

Not all house fires were about fire and smoke though, sometimes the dangers were hidden in the smoke and darkness, like this home on the north side of Bourbon, who called for help from the Sullivan Fire District, requesting a tanker and manpower both. Sullivan responded with the new tanker and a crew of seven firefighters who donned their gear and airpacks and entered the house through the basement door…

Assisting Bourbon House of Snakes

…and extinguished the fire. Bourbon was shorthanded that day on manpower and they were exhausted on arrival, but pitched in and helped to ventilate the home once the fire was out…when the smoke lifted in the basement, the firefighters found themselves surrounded by hundreds of snakes of all types in glass aquariums…the snakes had perished by smoke inhalation and luckily we didnt have any means to revive them. The homeowner was a snake collector and had many types of snakes in the basement, including poisonous snakes ! There sure were a lot of wide eyes in there when the smoke lifted !!

This next set of photos shows a call we received while several firefighters were in church…I remember jumping up and leaving church and going to the fire station with several others. On arrival, we discovered it was a house fully engulfed with a heavy volume of fire from the front half of the house in Oak Grove Village…

House Fire Oak Grove Village On Arrival

…this was an accidental fire, a resident starting a fire in a wood stove using a very flammable fuel mix, that literally exploded in the face of the person that lit the fire. Besides the house being heavily damaged by the intense fire, a super nice local boy suffered burns from this fire but made a complete recovery and went on to become a sensation from this area.

Shortly after finishing his two year term as Chief, Jim ran against Ed Hardy for a seat on the Board of Directors of the District and won, the beginning of more than a  fourteen year span of service on the Board of Directors, many years as Board President.  During his tenure on the Board, the Sullivan Fire Department saw many changes in equipment, personnel, and policies.

This timeline included the following highlights :

1980 — Purchase of land at 10 South Church Street

1981 — Purchase of Rescue Squad and City Pumper

Taking Delivery Squad and Pumper

1981 — Construction started on Station One, 10 S Church

1984  — Windmill Restaurant Fire in Stanton

In the early evening hours with the restaurant half full of diners, a thunderstorm rolled through the area and a bolt of lightning struck the building, setting fire to an area above the kitchen in the open airspace above the ceiling, which was not detected by employees or patrons inside the building for several minutes. By the time the fire was detected and the alarm dispatched, the fire had gained a strong foothold in the open space above the kitchen and restaurant, and heavy rolling fire greeted firefighters on arrival….

0 Just Prior to Arrival

Heavy fire had already penetrated the roof on the east end of the massive building and it was apparent the fire was heavy in the kitchen area as well….

0C Heavy Fire East Side Prior Arrival

As Roy Baldwin arrived on scene with Pumper 804, Jim and another firefighter quickly ran to the fire side and pulled two preconnect hoselines and stretched them out as other firefighters arrived and prepared to fight fire….

00A Arrival First Pumper

As Roy charged the lines at the pump panel, Jim began pulling supply lines from the back of the pumper, anticipating tanker connections…Cran Spindler is shown arriving as well and began assisting by helping Jim pull hose off the pumper as well…

01A Arrival Roy at Pump, Dad Pulls Hose

Within minutes, Tom Henson and two other firefighters arrived, packed up,  and began attacking the east end of the building from outside, while Command requested a second and third alarm for the fire….

02A Initial Attack NE Corner Front

03B Firefighters Attack Heavy Fire Conditions

Since the fire had not yet reached across to the front doors, Tom decided to try an interior attack through the front doors…he and Jim pulled a large diameter hoseline from Pumper 804…. fitted it with a large flow nozzle, and entered the double front doors. About twenty feet inside the door, Tom raised a ceiling panel and heavy fire was observed rolling across the vast open air space above the ceiling line…it was decided to back out of the building and begin a defensive exterior attack instead.….and Sullivan firefighters battled the heavy fire while help from fire departments surrounding Sullivan raced to the scene to assist, answering second and third alarms for assistance.

03D Firemen Approach with LDH for Attack

04A Firemen Forced to Retreat Outside

Firefighters were amazed with the speed of the fire that raced across the massive building, and shortly after darkness fell, the fire was beginning to get a foothold on the windmill tower itself…

08A Windmill Tower Catches Fire

...and as firefighters from Union to Cuba areas responded to the scene, they reported seeing flames high in the air from their areas…firefighters mounted a deck gun attack from the parking lot in an effort to gain control of the tower fire…

11A Trying to Prevent the Inevitable

…however, attempts to stop the growing fire with deck guns failed and the fire grew in intensity….tankers were shuttling water from the large diameter line hydrants along the South Service Road in Sullivan as well as the Meramac River at Meramac Caverns.

13A Just a Matter of Time Now

…by now the back of the building was fully consumed by fire as well as half of the tower….

18 Back of Building Well Involved

…and then the tower was soon totally engulfed in fire and it became a waiting game as fire crews backed away to safe positions….

23 Waiting for Wheel To Fall

24 Backed Off and Waiting

…while waiting for the inevitable to happen….

25 Windmill Crashes Down

…this became one of the biggest alarms of Dad`s time on the department as well as mine, the equivalent of a five alarm fire and a massive tanker shuttle ensued. The building was a total loss and was never rebuilt.

1985 — The District Board approved a training program.

A new training program was approved by the District Board and James was appointed by the Board as the Training Officer, with a sizeable budget allowed for classes and live burn exercises. Instructors came in from all over the state to provide classroom instruction followed up by live exercises. In the first three years, over 1000 hours of training were offered and provided.

1986 — Purchase of a five man Smeal Pumper, now 844.

This truck seated five firefighters and was formerly used by the Louisiana State University Fire Academy, carried 900 gallons of water and has a Waterous two stage pump. First red pumper purchased by the district and first pumper with a Waterous pump. Housed at Station Five now, 844.

1987 — Approved building of a smoke house Station One.

This was a two story smoke house built with in house labor at a tremendous savings to the district, upstairs above the meeting room and offices, and utilized by many firefighters and junior firefighters from departments all over the state for many years until recently when it was dismantled to make a day room for paid fire crews. However live burns and LP Gas training exercises could never be completely replaced by a simple smokehouse, so training programs were utilized that included a little bit of both as much as possible.

Beautiful Sunrise Behind Me

It used to be a rare occasion for me to be up at sunrise or before, unless I was paged out for a fire call or I was getting an early start on a trip. These days, specially during spring and fall times when daylight savings time meshes well with my departure time from work, though, I can be coming out the door at work or on the highway headed home when the sun rises behind me, and sometimes it can be quite beautiful as it was one day last week. Unfortunately I didnt have my camera with me, so I used my phone that has a pretty good camera inside it. As I crossed the Meramac River at Fenton, I looked left and noticed pink fluffy edges around the clouds and thought to myself that this might be a nice sunrise coming on…funny thing is, it was raining to the west and not too far away either, as I had checked the radar before leaving work a few minutes earlier. I didnt get a mile down the road, when I looked in my rearview mirror and was pleasantly surprised to see that the sunrise was now absolutely gorgeous…I crossed over three lanes of traffic to the shoulder by Maritz and walked to the back of my truck to snap a few photos with the phone camera….

Deepening Sunrise Fenton 0323

I then drove on west and about a mile later, again I looked in the rearview mirror and liked what I saw, so again I pulled to the shoulder just past the entrance ramp from Hwy 141 and walked to the back of the truck to shoot a few photos…only this time it started raining, so I snapped just a few photos this time…

…this one above just as it started to rain and the next one as its starting to come down harder….

…and believe me, I no sooner got back into my truck and headed west until it came down in gullywasher fashion…as I drove up Antire Hill, it was still pretty behind me but there was no more getting out to shoot photos by this time…however on the way up the hill, I noticed a split rainbow…now I really wished I had my camera with me because I could have captured it as a split, but my camera phone didn’t pan out wide enough to capture it. Here is the north end, sorry for the fuzziness……

Water Polo Game

Boy I had my work cut out for me yesterday…got up early on my day off and rode with my mom and dad down to Eureka High School….talk about a huge complex…several buildings spread out in the valley on the north side of town….one of them contains a nice sized pool and aquatic center…my sister asked me to come down and shoot some photos of my nephew Zach, before and during his water polo game. I have never even seen a water polo game so didnt really know what to expect, but it was def interesting. Mom wanted to get down there early enough to watch them warming up, thinking Zach`s game started at 4:30 pm, so we arrived at 4:15 pm and found out the JV team plays at 4:30 and the Varsity team, which Zach is on, plays after that…one thing they were right on about, it was like a sauna in there…if the air conditioning was on, we never felt it. I didnt take any photos during the JV game, just sat and watched the game and tried to figure it out…looked like a basketball game in terms of fouls and trying to take the ball away, and a little lopsided since one end of the pool is obviously shallow and the other deep, so there is a lot of treading water involved, specially for one of the goalies at all times, and swimming for those players in the middle of the pool on offense and defense. Def a strenuous game four quarters of six minutes each on JV and seven minutes each on Varsity and much easier to figure out than hockey.

Now mind you, most guys don’t like to have their photo taken right before a game, but Zach said to me, I like having my picture taken…so I took him down to the goal post to shoot some photos of him for his mom…she came down shortly after to tell him that she wanted him in a different pose…so we shot some of his idea and some of hers.

Close Up 4

…after taking a few of him like this, I let him go warm up so he could get his hair wet….

Swimming 1

…that’s what the orders were, to take photos of him before the warm up, so his hair would be dry and show off his new hair cut. 🙂

During the game, I joined my youngest niece Courtney, on the front row of the bleachers and we both photographed Zach during the game…Courtney is an aspiring photographer and planning to attend college for photojournalism…we compared notes and screens while shooting, she was getting some good photos as well as some blurry ones, same as me…we couldn’t set our speed up as high as  wanted to stop the action, and not have the grain show up in the image…I did like the water reflections though…

About to Block A Throw

…by the way…they were playing Clayton High School….

About to Launch The Ball

Action

…it was a great game, very hard fought game, both teams playing aggressively and Eureka at one time was up by many goals, many scored by Zach, I can see now why they were passing the ball to him alot…never did see any of his baseball games but always heard how he was a fast and hard throwing pitcher…they went into double overtime and lost during sudden death playoff…the officials seemed to be  a bit one sided and against Eureka…and the Clayton coach seemed to pick up on that and take advantage of it…he kept coming down the side of the pool to talk to them and you never once saw the officials get onto any of the Clayton players…..I told the lady I was sitting next to, had that happened in a baseball game, he would have been tossed ten minutes ago…that’s what makes it such a disappointing loss, if coaches would simply coach and let the officials handle the officiating without any interference from the coaches, it would make the game alot more enjoyable not only from the spectators side of things, but from the players as well.

Eureka definately has good teams though as well as a good coaching staff.

House, Sheds, and Tires Fire

I slept in Saturday morning after putting in a good, long workout Friday evening, and had just woke up at 9 am and was debating about whether to get up and head south to go rockhunting now, or snooze another 30 minutes, when my fire pager decided the issue for me. We were dispatched to a house fire not far from me, so I got up and started getting dressed, while Missy went to the sunroom door and waited as she normally does. I had turned my pager to open monitor and as I did, I heard one of the ambulance crews report heavy smoke down Hwy WW, which was where the fire was located…I moved faster…grabbed my camera and headed to the truck. As I pulled out of my driveway on to the street, I saw heavy black smoke billowing up from the direction of Hwy WW myself…here is what it looked like as I crossed over the Elmont Road Bridge…

00 Heavy Smoke From Elmont Bridge

..as I turned on to the Service Road going west, I could see our ladder truck coming down the road half a mile behind me…it was traffic city getting to the scene, seemed like everyone in town had seen the smoke and decided to come see where it was coming from…I parked in a nearby drive so as not to block the entrance drive and ran down to the scene, finding the ambulance crew of Jesse and Danny pulling hose from the top of Pumper 854 to prepare for the tanker when it arrived….

01 On Arrival, Heavily Involved

…Damon and Nolan were operating a hoseline at the front of the trailer while Cody was manning the pump controls on 854…the middle of the trailer was gone and they were alternating the hose stream on both exposed middle sides of the  trailer….

02 Damon and Nolan Lay Down The Stream

…it soon became evident to Damon that they werent getting enough water where it needed to be, so he and Nolan got up and moved in to get a better spot and I walked around the right side more…..

04 Trailer and 3 Sheds Well Involved

….as you can see, there was heavy fire in the east end of the remains of the trailer as well as heavy intense fire from a large steel shed behind the trailer, and the heavy black smoke was from a stack of tires behind the steel shed…

06 Transformer Baked

…and then to top it all off, the electric pole, located just a few feet from the trailer, started sparking and arcing, looked like the fourth of July again….

07 Transformer Lines Pop

More help soon arrived in the form of firefighters and tankers, and Bourbon and St Clair were sending trucks and manpower as well, so firefighters stretched additional hoselines and repositioned to get a better grip on the trailer fire first, starting at the west end where heavy flames were shooting out the end window….

09 Heavy Fire West End of Trailer

…firefighters soon had a plan in mind and prepared to attack the west end fires….

33 Casey Does Little To the Fire

…and he then hit the stack of tires again…

49 Jimmy Attacks The Tires

…but he was having little effect on the tires, so he instead turned his attention to the shed once more…crews were on the other side working their way in from the east entrance toward the back wall where Jimmy was positioned…

52 Jimmy Stretches Line to Shed Again

…within minutes firefighters had the scene under control, with only the tire pile left to extinguish….electric crews showed up from Crawford and disconnected the power to the pole and requested fire crews to extinguish the pole itself, so St Clair`s young crew were assigned the task of wetting down the pole with a stream of water….

53 St Clair Cools Electric Pole

…and I soon left the scene and headed south to go rockhunting….

Beautiful Sunset on My Way to Work…

I was driving into work a week ago tonight and noticed the clouds forming up to a potentially good sunset with some nice colors and shapes forming up by the time I drove through the Highway 50 interchange…looking at my clock, I decided I had a few extra minutes since I left a little earlier than normal. I decided to stop off at the Shaws Arboretum in Gray Summit since there is a pretty lake there that would give me great reflections if the clouds indeed did produce a nice sunset….as I exited near Mr Fuel and slowed at the top of the ramp, I looked west and saw this….

0223 Gray Summit 2

…and knew I had just a few minutes to get over to the Arboretum and find a good spot…once there, I found out the gates would shut at dark and knew this one would hang up in the sky for awhile, so I drove down to the lake and crossed the bridge, and looked back to see some nice reflections…

Three Alarm Building Fire This Morning….

Missy and I rolled out of bed about 5 am this morning for a building fire in the neighboring town of Gerald, 25 miles north of Sullivan, when one of our pumpers and tankers were paged out to assist on a second alarm and quickly escalated to a third alarm as I was dressing….I had to turn the computer on and bring up mapquest cause I couldnt remember where the road was located…and we were soon on the road to Gerald…figured I would park at the Roller Mill parking lot and then hoof it over to the fire, that way I would be well out of everyone`s way parking wise, but as it was, I was able to park on the crest of the hill above the fire and left Missy with a birds eye view of it.

It was a three story building in the back, one story in the front, an older church building made into apartments. I was able to smell the heavy smoke at the east edge of town and there were still some flames at the peak of the roofline when I arrived on the scene….

..of course, when I activated my big flashgun, well I lit up the guy sitting on the portable monitor just fine, but all my nice reflections and flames left me….

..so I shut that thing off and went back to the night shots…they look better anyway in my humble opinion….more dramatic anyway.

06 West Side Operations

Well as you can see, there was a glow and flames up there on the roofline…and firefighters and trucks from as far away as Boles Fire District at Gray Summit to the east, Gasconade departments like Owensville to the west, New Haven to the north, and Sullivan and St Clair to the south, put together a good plan for attacking the heavy fire and while it took a few hours, totally extinguished this fire….

…the two ladder trucks from Owensville and Union Fire Districts, set up in the very back, where there was a nice roomy parking lot that joined up with the new church parking lot behind it, giving firefighters better access for tanker shuttles and truck placement….

…the next two photos show our pumper 854 on the right side, supplying Union`s ladder 8212 with water and our Tanker 853 dumping its 3,000 gallon load into the drop tank for Owensville`s ladder truck…..I used my flashgun on the second photo…

…and here is a photo showing both ladder trucks in operation spraying water on the upper story area and roofline where the heaviest fire was located at the back of the building.

..I stayed long enough to shoot the beautiful sunrise coming up in the backdrop….

The Trailer Fire that wasnt….

Let me explain the title….we were dispatched to a reported trailer fire and arrived to find a wooden fence on fire near a trailer…I suppose if it was reported by a passing motorist from I-44, one could understand because the fence stood fairly high and was in front of a trailer, in a trailer park…here is what it looked like when we arrived….

…and here Engineer Bill Windham is shown at the pump  of Pumper 854 and charging the hoseline….

..that Firefighter Casey Bridgeman is holding and waiting for water to put the fire out….

…and then Casey starts extinguishing the fire on the leaves end and works his way to the fence….

04 Casey Starts Knocking Fire Down

…and eventually gets water on the fence as well….

…it was suggested that perhaps Casey didnt read this sign before he approached the small facility behind the fence….

Garage Fires New Years Weekend part 2

The next night, New Years Day, again early morning, we were called to another garage fire, this one a larger lean to, on Seminary Road north of Sullivan. As I drove out north on Hwy H and 185, it started lightly raining and the wind was really gusting…I kept looking for a glow but didnt see one…and soon caught up with the ambulance crew on Seminary Road, as they were out in front and looking for it as well…we finally found it after crossing the Boone Creek bridge and starting up one of the many hills north of there…I was relieved that it wasnt at the home of one of my friends out there. The ambulance crew of Danny and Teddi, tried to drive up the driveway to the residence, but soon found it was quite narrow and there was no place to park out of the way of the pumper once it arrived…so they backed down the rocky hillside and I parked on the side of Seminary Road out of the way. Since I was halfway up a hill, I plugged in my blue light to warn any traffic of the emergency situation they would be about to encounter, as Pumper 854 arrived and started up the rocky driveway. I grabbed my camera and hoofed it up the hill behind them….and found the large lean to fully involved in heavy fire at the top of the hilly drive…. 01 Fully Involved on Arrival   …as I was standing there photographing the fire, Capt Dave hiked up the hilly drive past me stretching an attack line…   02 Dave Stretches A Line Past Me   …as heavy fire was rolling out of the lean to near me….   05 Heavy Fire Rolls From Building   07 Heavy Fire From Lean To …Dave stretched his line out and took a kneeling position to wait for water at the end of the driveway, near the residence and in the next minute, Ray Enloe walked by me carrying his hoseline over his shoulder….as heavy fire continued to roll out of the lean to…   08 Heavy Fire   ..a few minutes later the wind changed direction and the smoke lifted to where you could see more of the leanto on fire….   10 Heavy Fire …and then firefighters began their attack, Dave first as his line was now charged by Davey, the Engineer on 854, as Ray and his helper untangled their hosepack….   11 Firefighters Begin Attack 12 Fire Attack Begins 13 Dave Begins His Attack …it was about this time that we all noticed this pretty green flame coming up from the middle of the structure…we never did quite figure out what it was from, and it only lasted a few minutes…

15 Pretty Green Flame

..once the guys had the fire knocked down in front, they moved around to the sides of the structure….

17 Dave On Attack Again

…while Ray and JD went to the back of the lean to and knocked down the debris back there…

18 Ray Enloe Hits Back of Lean To

…the glow in front made for some nice silhouettes….

…and as more firefighters showed up, along with a good showing of junior firefighters, crews were able to pull some sheets of tin out of the way and enable those on hoselines to get in closer and extinguish hot spots….
